The SAT requires an essay.  On the ACT the essay is optional (but I would do the essay unless you are certain you aren't applying to additional colleges).

Both tests have multiple-choice writing questions.  On the SAT, each writing question is discrete (meaning separate and distinct, as opposed to discreet, which means tactful and prudent).  On the ACT, they have passages with different sets of words underlined for the questions.  The ACT tends to be more interesting.  The SAT is truly boring.

The ACT has more punctuation questions and they also have questions regarding the best way to order sentences and paragraphs inside an essay.  Time is a bigger issue on the ACT than on the SAT.
