I specialize in language arts, study skills, organization and time management, and test prep in high school.  I can also work with middle school students on the 8th grade Regents test in English, setting up an organizational system and the SHSAT test.

Writing and Public Speaking

Writing is a long-term investment.  I do not proofread or edit papers and I cannot guarantee a grade of any kind on any paper.  What I will do is ask questions, help focus ideas, teach organizational and proofreading skills, and work with any writer to develop an individualized approach that capitalizes on specific strengths.  For example, one student hated typing or writing by hand, so I worked with him on brainstorming, developing an outline, and then using voice recognition software to dictate his paper.  He then needed to spend more time on editing and proofreading because he did not make those corrections as he wrote the initial draft.  We then developed and practiced an individual method that he could tolerate for in-class assignments.

Standardized Test Prep

The SAT is a silly test that makes a huge impact.  The ACT is a little less silly, but it is also just one multiple choice test.  They don't test your discipline, study skills, ability to interweave complex information or whether you are a good student or a good person.  They only test how well you bubble.  The good news is that most students can improve their scores.  By developing and practicing systematic strategies, you can improve your SAT & ACT scores.

Study Skills and Time Management

Some students need a little more help, especially with the transition from elementary to middle school or middle school to high school.  How do you take notes?  How do you plan a paper?  How does our memory tend to work?  What should I do with all this paper anyway?
